The Dying Language
of the
Bo-Kaap People

INTRODUCTION
Speaking a mix of 7 and more, different languages, they created a rich language of their own.
The Bo-Kaap Muslims were exposed to various languages from Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Netherlands, Britain, Arabia, Portugal, Zanzibar, and many others. The State restrictions on education for non-Europeans, deprived Muslims from gaining access to one sophisticated language skill. They were also prevented from Christian missionary schools - the only schools of the early 19th century. The cosmopolitan life of the Cape thus became their “centre of learning”. They did not lie down and dissipate. They were vibrant and created their own schools, language, writing style and gave rise to Bo-Kaaps. While doing this they established themselves as exquisite artisans, dressmakers and cooks, whom the statesmen and 3
women of the time could not do without. Their Islamic faith of cleanliness and openness to invite others to share their food, made many become Muslim or love them so much that Muslims enjoyed preference from the state departments - so much so that when Apartheid was established in South Africa, the Ruling National Party made a further “Apartheid” law that Bo-Kaap should exclusively be for Muslims, because they had to come to the Muslim tailors and dressmakers to fit on the clothes, as it was being made. They then thought that to keep the place safe for them, it would be wise to declare it a Malay Quarter where no bottle stores and Christian wine drinkers can mix, which would endanger their safety - this was God’s Way of ensuring that the Islamic Faith and Muslims are Protected - by the actual enemy. This allowed Muslims to grow and establish themselves uniquely as an outstanding group of people who has unique schools, skills, language, cultural practices and architecture. It is hoped that this set of words and phrases of the old Muslim Bo-Kaaps language, will allow readers to enjoy the richness of the atmosphere that prevailed in Bo-Kaap, up until the 1970’s.
I sincerely thank all the people who have been so kind to share their knowledge of the words and phrases 4
that they still remember, that could be added to my list below.
The following words and phrases were often used by the people of the Bo-kaap. Its sound-structure resembles that of Arabic, not English when using ‘o’ and ‘a’. You have to read the sounds with an Arabic-Bo-Kaaps’ accent if you want to enjoy it. The Afrikaans “kappie” and “deelteken” is not on my computer. Please add it on when you are able to, to ensure a close pronunciation. There are some words that were used that might look crude, but they were used with a sense of endearment or fun. I hope you will enjoy this compilation. Add more if you can, in the comments below. It must be borne in mind that Muslims and non-Muslims who were in contact in the Bo-Kaap, used many of these words and phrases and some are still used by the offspring. The newer generations in Bo-Kaap now generally speak English. It has thus become important to document some of the lost treasures of such a vibrant, skilful community of Bo-Kaap.5

So my aim is, to create jobs for our youth while they are still studying all sciences, holistically, so that they are well rounded to understand and appreciate the miracles (aayaat) of Allah SWT and Receive Allah SWT Baraka in their efforts in any money they earn and be given the opportunity to run their own businesses in holistic education, craft or markets in a manner that Draws constant Blessings and Support from Allah SWT, as I have experienced - when one puts your trust in Allah SWT and do well with what talents and opportunities Allah SWT Gives you and pursued it with sincerity then Allah SWT will mMake you successful, beyond your own expectations.
Alghamdu lillah, today I can offer our community real Quality Education and Holistically too, which the western world is unable to do and I can create jobs or income for our youth and other adults connected to ICRA - Alghandu lillaah - We are now small but Alghamdu illaah “Distinguishedly Aware” [Het ‘Ilm] about where the problems are and how to side-step it - and create solutions that are much higher than 49
the controlled western education, state policies and Capitalistic market strategies.
Coming back to our sense of humour - Alghamdu lillah - I found in my travels that the Malaysians and indonesians love playing the fool and poking fun at each other - they are also extremely creative - we definitely are their descendents, LOL.
The main thing I would advise is for us not to sell our skills and our language to the white film makers and refuse to partake in their productions, simply because they misrepresent us and have their own agendas. We should create our own productions that are not stereotypical. We must create genre’s that are unique, needs no big funding, use easy accessible tools and publish our own work - like I do - Alghamdu lillaah. I do not agree that our language be called Afrikaans 57
-Arab, because the Afrikaans the boere standardised is so young and borrowed, static and lifeless. Its structure alone is its death sentence. I was a pure Afrikaans student right up to my final year as a teacher. But when I came in my third year one Major Subject “Pedgogiek” was so anglicised from the English works on Pedgogics, that one page would have 90% Anglisismes daarin ! I switched to English as my major Language, there and then and completed my final year as an English student of the Teacher’s 3 year qualification and I never looked back. Yes Afrikaans cannot be equated with our language . It is borrowed from our creative language Bo-Kaaps - which is unique and warm as well as ethically non-sectarian, something Afrikaans cannot live up to. This proves that The Bo-Kaap people were not consumers of colonial language or borrowers, but creators of a language, by the Grace of Allah SWT, that would be punctuated by remembrance of Allah SWT and Islamic Ethos in a structural manner. This is something foreign to colonists who were operating away from God Almighty’s Remembrance and used Christianity to oppress the masses.
One of the Bilals (Salaah Callers) of Leeuwen Street Mosque, in packing the old book cupboard in the masjiet, found a printed Arabic scripted Islamic Faith lesson book written in Bo-Kaaps - a part that I could make out was”

Hoekom “Bo-Kaaps”
In 1658 the First settlement of Free Craftsmen and women was in Bo-Kaap to build the houses for the Dutch. It is a port, and so many Muslims came to settle in Bo-Kaap from other countries, because local Muslims were not slaves and threatened. They were allowed to practice their faith unhindered and be supported, even by the authorities. That is why many Arab scholars came to settle in Cape Town and marry our free women - of whom many of us are descendents. It is thus from the Bo-Kaap settlement, with its Bo-Kaaps language, that Islam spread to other areas, as people moved. The Strand and other Muslims speak a more standard Afrikaans and do not have access to the varied languages and dialects of Bo-Kaap.
Many Mosques were established in the small area of Bo-Kaap. This allowed for a mix of influence from different imaams’ way of speaking to their murieks/murreeds/followers, thus influencing the general vocabularies used in Bo-Kaap.
Bo-Kaaps is a holistic language that is mathematically sound through algorithmic, scientific structures that accesses various languages, temperaments and 68
opportunities to ease the flow of communication. Bo-Kaaps considers the context, depth, care, peace and joy that the sentence will create. “Bo-Kaaps” frees us from the Colonial hegemonies/dominance, who try to standardise languages to control the masses through examinations, that contain structures and words that ensure that the deprived cannot pass or get high marks - and in this way divide the masses into skills needed for the Capitalistic market, thus ignoring the child’s talents, natural skills and interests, the real important aspects of a person ICRA values, enhance and expose. While colonialists break the self-esteem of children to create 70
a dependent and broken citizen, who obey authority, to vote the elite into power and who become sick to swell the coffers of the enfranched doctors and the pharmacutical giants, ICRA frees the mind and develops a holistic person that is God-conscious, grateful and skilled to be independent, but caring enough to uplift the community - thus experiencing personal and community healing simultaneously. The conventional schools do exactly the opposite - it sickens the child and parents - and teachers!

The Religion of Islam and its Arabic Language and The Qur’an has strengthened and secured the Muslims with their own means of language, skills and resources and now that ICRA has presented a new Paradigm in education - Holistic Leisure Learning HLL and Qualification from a Youth Holistic Methodolgist to a Holistic Methodologist in Healing, with no exams that ensure mastery of 17 conventional academic and creative subjects, through the Shariah Guidance and appreciatively use the Forces of Allah SWT in Nature to free ourselves from slavery to man.
The Muslims of Cape Town and South Africa has a new lease on life for their children and adults - to accelerate the level of their knowledge, integrate it Holistcicall with all the sciences through the Qur’an and receive a new motivation to create a New South Africa that all will be able to benefit from. SAQA’s (South African Qualification Authority) Merit accredititation of ICRA’s 4year course, in becoming a Holistic Methodologist, as a completed South African Qualification for entry into any university or college in South Africa, without the conventional matric, has opened the doors for all South Africans to Qur’anically lead education - a Gift from Allah SWT, which underpin a support for a new future for all in 72

We must be confident in The Presence of Allah SWT to serve and share the Goodness and Opportunities Allah SWT has Given us here in South Africa and thus go pass prejudice and colonial tricks and systems that trap people. We need to unleash our potentials and choose to support creativity and not let old English formalities and colonial structures inhibit our natural flow, that demotivate us. Our Bo-Kaaps creates the needed strong base for change. Recognising the contributions of our imaams to secure our faith, allows us to tap into the Divine Ruugh (Spirit/ Life Force within) and the Best Way to start is to value our Bo-Kaaps, the language Bo-Kaap Muslims spoke and in so doing invited many into the fold of Islam. It is important to stay connected to our heritage that connects us with Allah SWT - Bo-Kaaps, that contains numerous Islamic Arabic words in its sentences is that path we can honourably take - The boere are realising that their survival of their departments and language depends on linking with us. That is Allah SWT Invitation for them to become Muslims, and a 73
challenge for us not to sell our heritage for a miserble price. To do this we need to change our paradigm from depending on the Kuffaar for survival to dependence on Allah SWT and the closeness of the Umma - the community of believers - IAA.
